The fourth senior art show “Aurora” opened on March 14 in the Norma E. Brown gallery, showcasing the work of ten Visual Arts magnet students. Previous art shows this school year have included Night Tide, Prison Break and Pyroluscent.

Colton Colglazier (12, VA) said that the seniors chose the theme “Aurora” because all of the featured students used light as a major motif in their work. This replaced their original concept of a 1980s-inspired theme.

“Light is a big part of my art,” Colglazier said. “I mostly work with perspective and shadows.”

The art show was originally scheduled to open last Thursday, but because of the girls’ state tournament basketball game, it was postponed until the following Monday.

Textiles teacher Ms. Alana Alford (Visual Arts) said that the students organized the show with minimal faculty assistance, and that she and the other teachers enjoy seeing their students grow from their freshman to senior years.

“When I get to teach them junior year, their artwork is already so mature,” she said. “It’s really amazing seeing how they develop their ideas.”

“I love seeing work that the VA seniors are proud of,” said Sydney Blocker (11, J&C), who attended the opening. “It’s really cool seeing the artists’ collections over their four years because you can really see them grow.”

The art from the “Aurora” show will be featured in the Norma E. Brown gallery throughout the week, and the next senior show will open in mid-April.
