The baseball team beat Waggener High School 9-8 on Wednesday, March 28 at Derby City baseball field.
Awaiting the arrival of their 2011-2012 season, the duPont Manual baseball players are participating in fall ball during the off season at Derby City Baseball field.
The team consists of JV and Varsity players who wear Cs on their chests in support of the Crimsons.
Although Manual’s teams are already close-knit, this parent-sponsored sport, which is seperate from Manual athletics, allows the team members to learn more about each other and get in extra practice before starting the demanding school season, according to Nathan Smith (11).
“It means a lot that our parents sacrifice their time, effort and energy so we can play the game we all love. It shows that they are caring and how much our activities mean to them,” said Harrison Scanlon (11).
“I think we will do well in the regular season. We showed we can compete with good teams in the fall,” said Andrew Olson (11)
The team’s school season will begin in late October.
The baseball team was defeated by Male High School 7-2 on Tuesday, May 24 in the first round of the district tournament.
Male jumped to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning off of senior pitcher Craig Pearcy, with 2 hits and a walk. They extended their lead in the 3rd inning, scoring 4 more runs after 2 errors from senior Stephen Surrell and one error from sophomore Nathan Smith.
The Crimsons scored in the 6th inning, when sophomore Harrison Scanlon was walked after two singles by seniors Trey Litsey and Craig Pearcy, and again in the 7th inning when Surrell hit a single after junior Josh Bynum and sophomore Nathan Smith got base hits.
“Losing that game was not only tough because it ended our season to our rival Male, but because we had worked so hard all season and put in so much effort that it was hard to see it wasted like that,” said Bynum. “I’ve played with those seniors for 3 years and have had so many memories, so it’s hard to accept that I’ll never get to play with them again.”
The Manual boy’s baseball team lost its away game to St. Xavier last night 5-1 despite their best efforts. Senior pitcher Craig Pearcy threw for 5 2/3 innings and gave up 3 runs on 6 hits. Eric Archer (12) scored Manual’s only run off a groundout RBI by junior Harrison Scanlon. The Crimsons are 5-7 after the loss.
